Fortification Studies
When it comes to medieval castles Slovenia is
rich both with preserved ones and their ruins. Generations of recognised
experts have covered well that area. Only slightly less attention
was given to medieval walled cities. But when it comes to other
fortifications there was a belief that apart from badly preserved
remnants of Antic Roman lines, churches fortified against Turkish
raids (tabori) and those of the former Charintian dorts that are
to be find on Slovenian side of the Predel Pass, there are no major
fortresses on Slovenian soil. The change of this view was brought
about by recognition of two fortified systems from thirties, the
eastern part of the Vallo Alpino and the Rupnik Line as an important
part of historical heritage. Considering the dimensions of this
newly opened topic Fortification Studies are therefore given more
attention than specialised and already well established fields,
such as castelology.
The department is maintaining the rigional SiteO.
